Cu Chi Tunnels in a half-day
During the Vietnam war, being part of a much larger network of tunnels that linked Viet Cong support bases more than 250 km, from the outskirts of Saigon all the way to the Cambodian border, the Cu Chi Tunnels, which are a massive network of underground chambers and tunnels in the Cu Chi district of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon), are considered as one of a large number of sites well worth spending your time if you are paying a visit to Saigon. However, visiting these tunnels on a tour can take the majority of a day as they are roughly 70km round trip from the center of Ho Chi Minh City. They may seem unreachable when time in the city is limited, but fear not: you can still have half a day to spare if getting there and back.
Hiring a taxi for the trip is not a bad idea. Since you are going to want to get an early start to the day, you should do this the night before. For a round trip to the tunnels, the taxi will cost you around 800,000 VND and each additional hour of a taxi for six hours will cost you 50,000 VND extra. Get the taxi pick you up at 6 in the morning so that you can go to Cu Chi when it opens at 7.00.a.m.
As you beat the larger tour groups and do not have to wait for them to slowly go through the narrow tunnels, being early is a great advantage. Also, you are not part of a larger tour group if you go to the tunnels independently, it is an amazing chance for you to have a more intimate experience with your tunnel guide. River cruise Mekong
It is no doubt that you will have much more time in the tunnels for pictures as you will not be waiting for the tour group stragglers and if you are lucky, you can be accompanied with an interesting guide who is a bit of a photographer himself. However, as you will be one of the first people to go through the tunnels, one thing to watch out for is that the bats that inhabit these underground areas may not yet have been scared off to other hiding spots. Get ready to feel a bat brush by on your crawl through.
You will definitely still have plenty of time to check out other nearby attractions such as the shooting gallery, Cu Chi village, the memorial temple, and even grab a bite to eat, after exploring the tunnels. After a long day exploring, there is no better choice than being back to your taxi and return to Saigon, where you can spend the rest of the day relaxing or even continue discovering.
As you can save time and split the taxi fare, if you are in a group of three or more, this half-day option works best. Try the bus for a cheaper tunnel excursion. Take bus number 13 (from Saigon to Cu Chi) at Ben Thanh bus station (opposite Ben Thanh market) for 7,000 VND and then take a second bus, number 79 (from Cu Chi to Ben Duoc) for 5,000 VND. Before enjoying the tunnels, do not forget to check returning bus times.
